Introduction → Human anatomy is the scientific study of the structure of the human body, including the shape, size, location, and relationships of body parts such as cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. It provides the foundation for understanding normal body structure and is essential for studying physiology, pathology, radiology, and medical imaging.
Anatomical terminology → Anatomical terminology is the standardized language used to describe the location, position, direction, and relationships of structures in the human body. It provides a clear and precise way for healthcare professionals to communicate about organs, tissues, body regions, and anatomical structures without confusion.
Anatomical Terminology Meaning
Superior Toward the head or upper part of the body.
Inferior Toward the lower part of the body or away from the head.
Anterior Toward the front of the body.
Posterior Toward the back of the body.
Medial Toward the midline of the body.
Lateral Away from the midline of the body.
Proximal Nearer to the point of attachment or origin.
Distal Farther from the point of attachment or origin.
Superficial Near or toward the surface of the body.
Deep Away from or farther from the surface of the body.
Internal Situated toward the inside of a structure or organ.
External Situated toward the outside of a structure or organ.
Ipsilateral Located on the same side of the body.
Contralateral Located on the opposite side of the body.
Bilateral Present or occurring on both sides of the body.
Unilateral Present or occurring on one side of the body.
Central Located near the center of a structure or body.
Peripheral Located away from the center of a structure or body.
Parietal Related to the wall or lining of a body cavity.
Visceral Related to an internal organ or the covering of an organ.

Anatomical position → Anatomical position is the standard reference position of the human body used to describe the location, direction, and relationship of body structures. In this position, the person stands upright, faces forward, with the head and eyes directed forward, arms at the sides, palms facing forward, and feet together or slightly apart with toes pointing forward.

Anatomical position

Body planes → Body planes and sections are imaginary lines or surfaces used to divide the body or an organ into specific parts for anatomical description and imaging. The main anatomical planes include the sagittal plane, which divides the body into right and left portions; the coronal plane, which divides it into anterior and posterior portions; and the transverse plane, which divides it into superior and inferior portions. In ultrasound, sections are commonly described as longitudinal, transverse, sagittal, coronal, and oblique views depending on the orientation of the transducer and the structure being examined.

Types of Planes / Sections:
There are 2 different ways to count them, depending on whether you mean anatomical body planes or ultrasound sections/views.

Sagittal plane: The sagittal plane is a vertical plane that divides the body or an organ into right and left portions. When it passes exactly through the midline, it is called the midsagittal (median) plane; when it is positioned away from the midline, it is called a parasagittal plane. In ultrasound, a sagittal view provides a longitudinal profile of the structure and is useful for assessing its length, contour, internal anatomy, and relationships with adjacent structures.
