Definition
The Empty-amnion sign refers to sonographic visualization of an amnion (an amniotic membrane/cavity) in the gestational sac without a concomitant identifiable embryo/embryonic pole when one would be expected by gestational age and by scanning plane. It has been described as a strong predictor of early pregnancy failure in multiple series and can help confirm nonviability when present.

Example: "Intrauterine gestational sac with visible amnion. No embryo/embryonic pole identified consistent with empty-amnion sign."
Conclusion
Visualization of an amnion without an identifiable embryo (empty-amnion sign) is strongly suggestive of early pregnancy failure in the appropriate clinical context.
