RIGHT KNEE JOINT ULTRASOUND
CLINICAL DETAILS
Side Examined: Right knee.
Indication: Knee pain / swelling / suspected effusion / soft-tissue injury (specify clinical indication).
Technique: High-frequency linear transducer ultrasound examination of the right knee joint in anterior, medial, lateral and posterior compartments. Dynamic evaluation and color Doppler assessment performed where indicated. Comparison with the left knee if required.
ULTRASOUND IMAGES
Longitudinal ultrasound view of the right vastus medialis muscle, demonstrating a focal heterogeneous hypoechoic region within the muscle fibres with surrounding altered echotexture and edema, suggestive of post-traumatic muscle injury and organizing intramuscular hematoma.
DETAILED ULTRASOUND FINDINGS
Suprapatellar Recess / Joint Effusion: No significant fluid distension of the suprapatellar recess or knee joint is identified in this example. No synovial hypertrophy or intra-articular debris is evident.
Quadriceps Tendon: Normal fibrillar echotexture and thickness; no focal tear, tendinosis or calcification identified.
Patella / Prepatellar Soft Tissues: Visualized patellar cortex is smooth. No prepatellar soft-tissue collection or bursal fluid distension.
Patellar Tendon: Intact with preserved fibrillar architecture and normal thickness. No focal tear or enthesopathic change seen.
Infrapatellar Fat Pad / Bursae: Hoffa's fat pad appears unremarkable. No significant superficial or deep infrapatellar bursitis.
Medial Compartment: Visualized medial collateral ligament is intact with preserved fibrillar pattern. No adjacent focal fluid collection. Visualized peripheral medial meniscal margin shows no obvious extrusion or parameniscal cyst.
Pes Anserine Tendons / Bursa: Tendons appear intact. No significant pes anserine bursal fluid.
Lateral Compartment: Visualized lateral collateral ligament, distal iliotibial band and biceps femoris tendon are unremarkable. No focal lateral soft-tissue collection. Visualized peripheral lateral meniscal margin shows no obvious parameniscal cyst.
Popliteus Tendon: Visualized portions show preserved echotexture without focal peritendinous fluid.
Posterior Compartment / Popliteal Fossa: No popliteal (Baker's) cyst or other focal cystic or solid mass identified in this example.
Posterior Neurovascular Structures: Visualized popliteal vessels are unremarkable on limited sonographic assessment. This examination is not a dedicated vascular Doppler study.
Synovium / Doppler Assessment: No appreciable synovial thickening or abnormal synovial hypervascularity on the illustrative assessment.
Vastus Medialis Muscle (Abnormal Finding): Focal heterogeneous hypoechoic area is noted within the vastus medialis muscle fibres. Mild surrounding muscle edema and altered echotexture are seen. Findings may represent post-traumatic muscle fibre injury with organizing intramuscular hematoma. Colour Doppler assessment should be documented for internal/peripheral vascularity. No definite drainable collection is identified in the provided images.
Additional Findings / Measurements: Document the affected side, lesion dimensions and Doppler vascularity after examination.
IMPRESSION
Post-traumatic changes in the vastus medialis muscle, suggestive of partial muscle fibre tear with organizing intramuscular hematoma and surrounding edema.
RECOMMENDATION
Clinical correlation advised. MRI may be considered if symptoms persist or worsen.

Ultrasound does not reliably evaluate the deep intra-articular menisci, cruciate ligaments, articular cartilage or bone marrow. A normal ultrasound does not exclude internal derangement. Findings are operator-dependent; all example findings must be verified against the actual scan.
